The current study investigated the presence of lactic acid bacteria in the breast milk of healthy women. The presence of lactic acid bacteria may affect the qualitative and quantitative composition of the neonate gut microflora. The results of this study indicate that breast milk contains a natural source of lactic acid bacteria for a newborn, and may therefore be considered as a syntiobic food.
