Nutricia was founded in the Netherlands in 1896 by two brothers, Jan and Martinus van der Hagen, who were inspired to start developing infant formulas by the work of Prof. Backhaus (Professor of Agriculture, Göttingen, Germany).
In a time of alarmingly high infant mortality, Prof. Backhaus had succeeded in developing an infant formula that approached the composition of human milk. Soon afterwards, Danone Nutricia Research created the first nutritional product for diabetic patients and those suffering from goitre (a thyroid condition linked to a lack of iodine in the diet). Today, Danone Nutricia Research continues to work from our globally recognised research and development centre in Utrecht, the Netherlands and various satellite locations.
Our organisation is dynamic and has a rich history. Today, Danone Nutricia Research continues to work from our global research and innovation hub.
