Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) and their related signs and symptoms have a fundamental impact on the psychosocial, physical and mental well-being of infants and their parents alike.

This is a systematic review with a registered protocol, following rigorous methods, including an extensive search, and data extraction and study quality assessment by two independent reviewers. It is aimed to investigate the direct and indirect costs associated with FGIDs.

Infants with digestive issues may not always meet the stringent Rome diagnostic criteria for FGIDs. However, FGIDs associated signs and symptoms (e.g. hard stools) are of relevant parental and health economic concern.

This review is of relevance to support the category in Tailored Nutrition in GI health.
