This double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre study investigated the effect of dietary intervention with synbiotics on the prevalence of asthma-like symptoms in infants with atopic dermatitis. 90 infants with atopic dermatitis (AD) age <7months were randomised to receive an extensively hydrolysed formula with Bifidobacterium breve M-16V and a galacto/fructo-oligosaccharide mixture, or the same formula without synbiotics during 12 weeks. Results showed that after 1 year, the prevalence of asthma-like symptoms was significantly lower in the synbiotic group compared to the placebo group. Results suggest that infant formula supplemented with synbiotic mixture prevents asthma-like symptoms in infants with AD.
