The importance of nutritional support for critically ill patients, e.g. surgical and intensive care patients cannot be overstated. Critical illness is typically associated with a catabolic stress state and increased morbidity and mortality risk. Because many of these patients are unconscious and have multiple-organ dysfunction, including gastro-intestinal dysfunction, optimal nutrition support is a big challenge.
