Through process technology and pilot-plant testing, we bring a product from small- to full-scale production in our manufacturing plants located around the word, relying on the expertise of process technologists, food science technologists, and industrial engineers.
One of the key capabilities of Nutricia Research is the ability to take nutritional concepts through various processing steps, in order to create actual products in large quantities while maintaining the product quality and safety. Process technology aims to answer two main questions. Firstly, can our production facilities already make specific products or should we adapt the production process? And secondly, are there possibilities to improve the production process?
One of the ways to test new production processes is by using our pilot plant. At the pilot plant in the innovation centre in Utrecht, The Netherlands, we test new technologies, such as new separation and sterilization technologies, at a relatively small scale. The pilot plant has production equipment for producing both liquid and powder formulations. We produce on a small scale in our pilot plant (up to 50 kg/hr) and subsequently scale up to large factory scale (up to 12 tons/hr).
Key capability to create products in large quantities while maintaining quality and safety.
Our experts are in contact with our production plants, located around the world, to investigate the impact of new products on the existing facilities. For some products, we also work with third party suppliers, who must also produce to our precise standards. We are constantly looking for the newest technologies and materials that could further improve our production processes. These improvements could mean a higher production capacity, a more efficient or more robust process or higher energy efficiency. Through process technology, we deliver nutritional products for our many consumers and patients worldwide.
