INNOVATE TO SUPPORT
HEALTHIER LIVES

At Nutricia Research, we are committed to develop high quality nutritional products with scientifically-proven benefits for each phase of early life, aiming to give children worldwide a healthy start in life.

PREBIOTICS scGOS/lcFOS (9:1)
Prebiotic oligosaccharides are an abundant bioactive component in human milk. We have developed a patented mixture of prebiotics, similar to human milk, short-chain galacto-oligosaccharides scGOS/lcFOS (9:1). The health benefits of scGOS/lcFOS (9:1) are validated by almost 20 years of research, with a total of over 30 studies, described in >55 scientific publications.
These health benefits include:

  • Reduced incidence of allergic symptoms, such as atopic dermatitis [ 1, Arslanoglu, S., et al., Early dietary intervention with a mixture of prebiotic oligosaccharides reduces the incidence of allergic manifestations and infections during the first two years of life. J Nutr, 2008. 138(6): p. 1091-5. 2, Arslanoglu, S., et al., Early neutral prebiotic oligosaccharide supplementation reduces the incidence of some allergic manifestations in the first 5 years of life. J Biol Regul Homeost Agents, 2012. 26(3 Suppl): p. 49-59. 3, Moro, G., et al., A mixture of prebiotic oligosaccharides reduces the incidence of atopic dermatitis during the first six months of age. Arch Dis Child, 2006. 91(10): p. 814-9. 4 Gruber, C., et al., Reduced occurrence of early atopic dermatitis because of immunoactive prebiotics among low-atopy-risk infants. J Allergy Clin Immunol, 2010. 126(4): p. 791-7. ]
  • Increased level of healthy gut bacteria and reduced level of potentially harmful bacteria [ 5 Haarman, M. and J. Knol, Quantitative real-time PCR assays to identify and quantify fecal Bifidobacterium species in infants receiving a prebiotic infant formula. Appl Environ Microbiol, 2005. 71(5): p. 2318-24. ]
  • Reduced occurrence of infections¬†[ 6, Martin, R., et al., Early life: gut microbiota and immune development in infancy. Benef Microbes, 2010. 1(4): p. 367-82. 7 Jeurink, P.V., et al., Human milk: a source of more life than we imagine. Benef Microbes, 2013. 4(1): p. 17-30. ]
  • Improved stool frequency and consistency

We also demonstrated that the favourable health benefit of the use of this specific mixture of prebiotics scGOS/lcFOS (9:1) results in positive short and long-term health economic benefits (Lenoir-Wijnkoop et al. 2013).

SYNBIOTICS scGOS/lcFOS (9:1) and Bifidobacterium breve M-16V
Bifidobacterium breve is commonly found in human milk and in the gut of breastfed infants. Our research demonstrated that Bifidobacterium breve M-16V is the most promising strain in reducing allergic symptoms and in producing synergistic benefits when combined with our unique prebiotic mixture scGOS/lcFOS (9:1).

  • Improves allergic symptoms in infants with IgE-mediated atopic dermatitis [ 1 van der Aa, L.B., et al., Effect of a new synbiotic mixture on atopic dermatitis in infants: a randomized-controlled trial. Clin Exp Allergy, 2010. 40(5): p. 795-804. ]
  • Improves diaper dermatitis and gastrointestinal symptoms [ 1 van der Aa, L.B., et al., Effect of a new synbiotic mixture on atopic dermatitis in infants: a randomized-controlled trial. Clin Exp Allergy, 2010. 40(5): p. 795-804. ]
  • Prevents asthma-like symptoms [ 2 van der Aa, L.B., et al., Synbiotics prevent asthma-like symptoms in infants with atopic dermatitis. Allergy, 2011. 66(2): p. 170-7 ]

COMBINATION OF PREBIOTICS scGOS/lcFOS (9:1) AND n-3 LC-PUFA
Based on the knowledge that the immune system keeps on developing at least until 3 years of age, Nutricia Research has combined expertise in immunity and gut health to support the immune system in toddlers. The combination of specific prebiotic mixture scGOS/lcFOS (9:1) and high n-3 LC-PUFA is clinically proven to support the immune system by positively influencing the intestinal microbiota and lcPUFA status in young children, resulting in reduced risk of infections
[ 1, Chatchatee, P., et al., Effects of growing-up milk supplemented with prebiotics and LCPUFAs on infections in young children. J Pediatr Gastroenterol Nutr, 2014. 58(4): p. 428-37 2 Rezaiki L., et al., A specific mixture of scGOS/lcFOS/LCPUFA increases faecal bifidobacteria in healthy young children. ].

FERMENTS scGOS/lcFOS (9:1) and fermented formula
Gastrointestinal-related issues e.g. colic, spitting-up, are common causes of infant discomfort [ 1 Iacono, G., et al., Gastrointestinal symptoms in infancy: a population-based prospective study. Dig Liver Dis, 2005. 37(6): p. 432-8 ]. It has been shown that our prebiotic mixture scGOS/lcFOS (9:1) supports the functions of the immature digestive system in infants, i.e. nutrient digestion and absorption, softening of stools and improving gut comfort and well-being in infants [ 2, Costalos C, Kapiki A, Apostolou M, Papathoma E. The effect of a prebiotic supplemented formula on growth and stool microbiology of term infants. Early Hum Dev 2008; 84(1): 45-49 3, Moro G, Minoli I, Mosca M, Fanaro S, Jelinek J, Stahl B, Boehm G. Dosage related bifidogenic effects of galacto- and fructooligosaccharides in formula-fed term infants. Supplementation of a bovine milk formula with an oligosaccharide mixture increases counts of faecal bifidobacteria in preterm infants. Arch Dis Child Fetal Neonetal Ed 2002: F178-21 181 ].
