Nutricia Research is our R&D organization dedicated to innovating for medical nutrition. Within medical nutrition, our main research areas are paediatric care, metabolics, elderly care and disease. Additionally, we are exploring the benefits of nutrition in the area of active ageing. We have a wide range of ages in mind when conducting research and developing nutritional products, from infants with cow’s milk allergy to elderly people in need of tube nutrition. We investigate the specific nutritional needs associated with age, health conditions and diseases and apply this knowledge for our consumers and patients.

Medical nutrition can improve the quality of life of patients and complete a healthcare giver’s toolbox

Research shows that medical nutrition can improve the quality of life of patients and consumers. As dietary management, it completes a healthcare giver’s toolbox, which also includes medication, food, medical devices and lifestyle modification. Medical nutrition comes into play when patients have specific needs due to their condition and that a normal balanced diet is not possible or does not deliver all the specific nutrients as a person needs. It can be used in a range of situations. It can help patients regain strength and energy and recover faster. Or it can contribute to children who need extra nutrition to catch up in growth. On a larger scale, medical nutrition has also been shown to lead to lower costs of care: fewer complications, shorter hospital stays and reduced mortality.

In a patient-centred approach, it seems logical to see both the patients and his or her healthcare holistically. It’s all about how integrated healthcare helps to give patients and consumers a better quality of life now and in the future.
